BEST OF AUSTRIA 2022

Low-tech Parlor in Pine
Jugendgästehaus Gerlosplatte
Krimml, Salzburg

The 450-bed hostel, geared towards school ski and sports week outings, is perfectly tailored to its young clientele. Unpretentious and raw in its execution, it focuses on the essential: diverse spatial opportunities for social gathering. The heart of the 75-meter-high timber frame building is a central hanging ramp, an interior promenade that creates an airy space with exciting visual connections. The large volumes of the indoor sport facilities fit together with the convoluted room wings like a 3D puzzle, forming  a compact whole that, despite its size, does not feel like a barracks and is cleverly embedded in the landscape.
